". I have voted in favour because I believe it is crucial to explain to consumers what organic products are and what products are organic. Given growing demand and the interest of a large number of farmers in implementing good practices that are healthy and respect the environment, the Commission proposal to amend Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 to monitor the development of organic farming in the European Community is fully justified. I agree with the measures put forward by the rapporteur, specifically as regards combating any ambiguity surrounding products’ names, which could create confusion and a false understanding of organic products of consumers. In fact, there is a growing need for certainty as regards terminology in the various Community languages identifying organic production methods, which must be given a label whose symbol is immediately recognisable to every citizen of the Union’s Member States, and labelling must be precise regardless of the product’s origin. Similarly, biodiversity must be preserved, crops and products must be protected and all and any pollution of organic crops by Genetically Modified Organisms must be avoided. It is important in this regard to protect and support organic seeds."@en1
