lpv:translated text	"Mr President, the debate on the use of stem cells in research has to be based on fact and steered away from emotional argument. Talk of life and death distort reality. Stem cell research is only a question of life, as research can help save countless lives each year. For this reason EU funding must in future be targeted at stem cell research. As the Commission proposal also states, stem cell research is expected to play an essential role in promoting the development of forms of treatment in many areas of medicine. This applies in particular to the treatment of various degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease but also to more common diseases such as diabetes, the number of cases of which has rocketed. For Europe to be able to exploit stem cells successfully in the future the most important thing now is to set aside adequate resources for basic research into stem cells and furthermore permit the funding of embryonic stem cell research under the Sixth Framework Programme. This will ensure that research in the field can make progress within a regulated framework and that European researchers and ultimately patient groups can benefit immediately from new knowledge and skills in the field. If the use of stem cells is not permitted under the constitutions of some EU Member States, that must not be a barrier to research, and the benefits obtained from it as a result, in other EU countries. I am against artificial deadlines. It is wrong to set dates before and after which stem cells can be used. Of course ethical principles and technical safety measures have to be complied with, but now, ladies and gentlemen, it is a question of cells that will be destroyed in any case. In any case, we have to use our common sense in this matter."@en1
