". I welcome the initiative of tabling a motion for a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, currently sitting in New York, requesting that a universal moratorium on the death penalty be adopted. This initiative will contribute to the future abolition of the death penalty in every country in the world. Thousands of men and women share this aspiration, while the number of countries that have abolished the death penalty from their legal systems is rising all the time. The abolition of the death penalty is an important step forward for civilisation, one that must be extended to every country. Just as crucial is doing away with the policy of double standards so often pursued by the US Administration."@en1
