"The currently applicable European Patent Convention is interpreted differently from one Member State to another. What is clear is that it is seen as legally insecure and as producing negative effects on the internal market. That is why we believe there is a need for an EU directive.
The proposal for a new directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions has given rise to a lot of debate. We concur with the huge criticism that has been directed against making the concept of the patent too wide, something that would be downright damaging and mean that the wealth of invention would be reduced. Consequently, we have voted in favour of amendments aimed at narrowing down the concept of the patent. In the final vote, we voted in favour."@en1
