". Mr President, the Treaties should include a legal basis for European tourism policy. This has for years been the view of the majority on the Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism, and I might add that I do not share it. The reason for this request is the following: for a considerable number of regions in the European Union, the tourism industry forms an important, if not most important, source of income, just as agriculture or industry do in other regions. Many businesses in the tourism industry are small and medium-sized enterprises and would already benefit from regulations for this category. Nevertheless, it is expected that a Community tourism policy would provide extra support for the industry’s sustainable development. Prosperity in the relevant regions would increase, thereby benefiting economic and social cohesion. As such, the Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism would request that a legal basis for European tourism policy be included in the new Treaty."@en1
