If we try to complicate the work of the open-source community, software houses, those toiling away on their own and small associations by extending patentability, we shall be destroying the whole basis of the information society. Innovations that benefit all of us, such as Linux, show just how big an issue this is: it is about narrowing the digital divide. Of course, copyright already protects software codes. Software patents have their downside in that designers can by no means always know they are infringing patents and may indeed become liable for damages on a huge scale. The limits of patentability must be defined in such a way that programs, algorithms and business methods are, as such, precluded from patentability, and so that patents may not be used to hinder competition. We support small-scale entrepreneurship in this sector."@en1
