I have voted in favour of the report currently before us because I believe it is important to uphold preferential access to EU markets for bananas from the ACP countries, as is the need to reduce, by means of diversifying production, the economic dependency of these countries on the profits made from the sale this fruit.
I note and share the rapporteur’s concern about the environment, and I would suggest a gradual and appropriate approach to withdrawing support from farms that are not ‘environmentally friendly’. I endorse his call for the Commission to pay particular attention to the needs of those countries such as Cape Verde and banana producers in Member State territory that, in this regard, do not even make use of the appropriations to which they are entitled. We must continue to give them our support."@en1
