"Question No 53 by Alexandros Alavanos (): In its answer to my Oral Questionon the concentration of microparticulates in the air in Athens, the Commission states that: 'Relating to the year 2001 it (Greece) has reported exceedance of the daily limit value plus margin of tolerance at five stations and exceedance of the annual limit value plus margin of tolerance at six stations' and that the ‘natural reasons’ which the Greek authorities believe to be responsible for the exceedance of the limit values have not been justified. It concludes that: 'Results from the APHEA 2 project indicate that effects of PM10 on mortality are more severe at higher nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels and in warmer climates.' The Commission's answer has caused legitimate concern, given that, according to reports in the national daily press (25 June 2003), NO2 has exceeded the warning levels at all measuring stations and is combined with very high temperatures, and the Ministry responsible has stopped issuing information on this matter. How does the Commission view this situation? How does it intend to intervene to ensure that Athenians are informed and protected?"@en1
