". VAT, like all indirect taxes, is a scandal. It is a tax which is paid at the same rate by the poorest and by the wealthiest, by the unemployed worker and by the billionaire. In other words, the real problem is not ‘administrative cooperation’ between States, as proposed by the author of the report, but the fact that VAT’s share in State revenue is much greater than that of income tax, which is, at least to some extent, in proportion to the size of taxpayers’ incomes. We are demanding the complete abolition of VAT, and its replacement by a tax on incomes and on wealth which would be highly progressive, to the point where the tax paid by the wealthy classes would make up for the loss of earnings caused by the abolition of indirect taxes. We voted against this report."@en1
