"Mr President, I would like to raise the same point. For nearly 30 years the enclaved Greek Cypriot communities in the northern part of Cyprus have been denied secondary schooling for their children. The result of this is that once their children reach school age, they have to go to other parts of Cyprus to attend schools. This leads to the break-up of families and is designed purely to drive from their homes the few remaining Greek Cypriots in the northern part of Cyprus, which is currently controlled by Turkish authorities.
This is a matter on which the European Court of Human Rights has registered its protest and noted that this is a violation of Article 2. I would call upon the House to appeal to Mr Denktash to reverse his decision not to allow the secondary schools to reopen. For too long families in these enclave communities have been deprived of their human rights and deprived of the right to education. Now that there are increasing signs of reconciliation between Cyprus' two communities, and on the eve of Cyprus' membership of the European Union, this is a very good time to show evidence of that reconciliation by allowing the secondary schools to re-open in the enclaved Greek Cypriot communities."@en1
