"I would like to thank the President-in-Office
and Commissioner Lamy. I am sure that Parliament will support all the efforts made so that the Commission and the Council Presidency, in their relations with the United States Government, reach a positive outcome. I must say that, also from personal experience, it would be desirable for their words to fall on more receptive ears than those we encountered as a European Parliament delegation when we raised this matter with the President of the United States Congress Foreign Relations Committee: we were answered, shall we say, in not particularly diplomatic terms. We have our courts and our Constitution and we will never allow a United States citizen to be tried and judged outside them. I am sure that there will be more receptive ears within the United States administration and also the United States Parliament."@en1
