". If I have understood correctly, this issue concerns an incident that occurred in airspace between Greece and Turkey. The Commission does not have specific information on this incident, beyond what has been reported in the press. With the cautiousness that this type of statement requires, we believe that this incident must be seen in the context of the dispute between Greece and Turkey over the Aegean Sea. We hope that this issue of national airspace, as well as that of territorial waters and the continental shelf – over which these two countries, to my knowledge, have been arguing for some time now – will be resolved in the course of the meetings taking place between the Greek and Turkish authorities. With regard to Turkey, as a country that is applying to join the European Union, it has given a commitment to meet a number of criteria and the Commission recalls, in response to your question, Mr Zacharakis, the principle of what is called the peaceful settlement of border disputes. This has always been our approach, in line with the criteria set out in the conclusions of the Helsinki European Council of 1999. We also made this issue a specific priority for the review of the partnership for Turkish accession, which was adopted in May 2003. Accordingly, as on other matters requiring progress on the part of Turkey, we will closely follow developments in this matter and will present a detailed assessment in the periodic report that we are due to publish at the beginning of November."@en1
