"Mr President, I would like to make some very brief comments about positive developments in Angola. I was in Angola last week, where I was able to take part on behalf of my group in the UNITA Congress. (I would remind my fellow Members that there was a civil war in Angola until a year and a half ago.) I must say that it was a democratic congress, which featured three candidates. The Speaker of the Angolan National Assembly took part in the congress’s opening and represented the President of the Republic. At the close, Angola’s President sent a message of congratulation to the new president-elect, Isaias Samakuva. Mr Samakuva replaced the interim president, who had been carrying out presidential responsibilities for the previous year. I feel, therefore, that we in the European Parliament should not only report bad news but also good news. For a few moments I would have said that we were in a country with a long democratic tradition. I think that this fact should fill us with satisfaction and joy, since Parliament has already stated its support for peace and democracy in Angola several times in the course of this legislative period. I have furthermore been a witness to the positive progress of peace and democracy in Angola. That is the testimony I am delighted to bring to this Chamber."@en1
