The Algerian ambassador to the United Nations has requested that the representative of the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, leave Algeria. For its part, the World Bank has decided to suspend programmes in the country until the presidential elections in 2004. I would ask, Mr President, for a response from Parliament, that a letter of response be sent to the President of the Republic and the Algerian Government and that a letter of support be sent to the United Nations Secretary General and to the person concerned. I would also call upon the Commission to arrange a debate with the United Nations on the situation of this country, with regard to judicial reforms and, in particular, the earthquake.
