".
Authorisation for smoke flavourings in food is at the moment totally deregulated in the European Union – some Member States have restrictions in place and others have no legislation at all in this area. A definition of legislation was therefore needed, so that the authorisation procedure could be harmonised. I also welcome the definition of a positive list produced by the European Food Safety Authority and based on the latest scientific knowledge. It is therefore to be hoped that the precautionary principle – the basis for every European food policy – will also apply whenever a new application for a smoke flavouring is made."@en1
