The vote on a report proposing measures designed to provide better information for European citizens on the functioning of the European Union should, in theory, be a foregone conclusion. This is far from the case with this text, which is entirely based on concern over the European Union’s popularity deficit and the declining participation in European elections. It mainly blames the lack of information and approaches that tend to portray the Union as a permanent battlefield between national interests. By way of solutions, it proposes communication campaigns in order to promote common European values and the practical benefits of Union membership for daily life.
We believe the lack of popularity of the EU is due to the fact that its current priorities are neither democracy nor solidarity, but free trade, jeopardising public services and creating a policed fortress Europe. The question, therefore, is not how better to organise institutional propaganda that is far removed from reality, but to find ways to present clearly to the citizens the debates on tomorrow’s Europe and enable them to make themselves heard at every level. For this reason, we did not vote in favour of the report."@en1
