"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I should like to inform the House that the European Court of Human Rights recently issued a ruling in connection with the trial of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. In its ruling, the Court of Human Rights accepted that Mr Οcalan had not been tried by an independent, impartial court and had not had adequate time or facilities for the preparation of his defence.
At the same time, Mr Ocalan has been kept in more or less solitary confinement for some three months or more. He has even been prevented from communicating with his lawyers or communicating with his family and I think that the European Parliament should protest to the Turkish Government – remember that Turkey is a candidate country – and call for Mr Ocalan to be guaranteed the basic rights to which every prisoner is entitled."@en1
