". On behalf of us all, Mrs Laguiller expressed opposition in her speech to the business closures and redundancies planned by Arcelor. The only way to prevent finance groups from acting is to prohibit mass redundancies and guarantee workers’ salaries by taking funds from profits. The compromise text, which is limited to a few protectionist measures and additional regulations which employers will not observe in any case, does not propose any practical measures for the protection of workers. It is therefore out of the question for us to sanction this text. The only reason we did not vote against it is because it proposes a few additional prerogatives for trade unions and we did not wish to oppose these. Redundancies, however, are not more justified simply because the trade unions have been consulted."@en1
