".
This whole discussion about the best way to kill neatly or to fight a war without killing any civilians is in itself surreal. Even more so given today’s circumstances, when we are aware that the United States, with the open or hypocritical cooperation of the great European powers, are preparing to start a war against Iraq in the next few days which, even if it ends with the fall of the dictator Saddam Hussein, will kill thousands of civilians.
For our part, we are using this opportunity to protest against the imperialist war against Iraq.
We voted in favour of the few passages that propose banning anti-personnel mines, while being aware that the proposals are quite irresolute and will not become a reality. However, we voted against the text as a whole because, on the pretext of wanting wars ‘that conform with international law’ it justifies past, present and future imperialist attacks."@en1
