".
This report won my vote because it demonstrates the importance of speeding up the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in the context of reducing poverty in the developing countries. These diseases kill more than five and a half million people every year, have destabilising effects on society, and compromise the work and the progress achieved over the last few years in social and economic development.
HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis require a global and coherent response, which will cost considerably more than the financial and human resources available to most developing countries. Action in this field is in everyone’s interest and should not be seen simply as a development aid issue, but as contributing to improving health and reducing poverty in the developing countries.
We must, therefore, adopt a regulation on this matter, which aims to improve the overall provision of healthcare and measures of prevention, to reduce the costs of essential medicines and to step up research."@en1
