". We are all aware of the importance of the activity of the Member States’ fleets in non-Community waters. This is crucial for supplying our market, which has a shortfall in fish products and for preserving fishing in those EU regions that depend on it and which tend historically, to be least-favoured regions, which lack economic alternatives. I have voted in favour of this report in order to convey this importance and to demonstrate my agreement with the analysis made by the rapporteur – I agree with many of the suggestions she has made. To quote the introduction to the code of conduct for responsible fisheries, (28th session of the FAO Conference of 31 October 1995, ‘Fisheries, including aquaculture, provide a vital source of food, employment, recreation, trade and economic well–being for people throughout the world, both for present and future generations and should therefore be conducted in a responsible manner.’ I would highlight the rapporteur’s warning about the need to combat all forms of illegal fishing, her call for closer relations with the Mediterranean countries and her request for the creation of joint ventures with third countries to be encouraged. The Commission still needs to clarify how it is going to secure a higher profile for the international dimension of the common fisheries policy within the Union's external policy. It is also crucial that effective aid for the renewal of fishing fleets is maintained."@en1
