I wish to congratulate Mr Pirker on the excellent report he has produced on the communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament entitled ‘Towards integrated management of the external borders of the Member States of the European Union’ which I fully support, in particular with regard to the aptness of creating a European Corps of Border Guards. Whilst not replacing the national authorities responsible for managing their external borders, this would enable them to work together to ensure the internal security of the Union and the implementation of the principle of freedom of movement. I would also stress my conviction that the efficiency of border management will probably be improved by the adoption of common measures in the field of external border management."@en1
