"Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make to you, which has to do with the tragic accident to the oil tanker
which foundered off the coast of Galicia, and the final conclusions newly adopted by the Council in Copenhagen. I have received from the Commission a proposal, relating to these events, for a regulation instituting specific measures to compensate the Spanish fisheries, shellfish industry and aquaculture affected by the oil spills from the
. In view of the circumstances of extreme urgency and the grave effects involved, the Council will do everything in its power to ensure that this proposal is adopted without delay and, if possible, during the Council meeting that is currently in progress. Parliament should deliver the opinion required of it as soon as possible. The proposal has been agreed with the Committee on Fisheries, and I propose that we should change the agenda in such a way that we can vote on this proposal at midday today. As there are no objections to this proposal, that is how we shall proceed."@en1
