"I agree with the opinions expressed by the President-in-Office of the Council. Of course, I completely disagree with the view of Mr Giscard d'Estaing that Turkey’s entry should be conditional upon certain racist requirements; but what is clear is that we MEPs have an obligation to communicate to the Community institutions any cases in which a candidate country is not complying with the conditions demanded of it. Bearing in mind that Turkey’s candidature still has a long way to go, does the President-in-Office of the Council not believe that the Turkish Government should be made aware of these facts in order to demonstrate to it, in a specific manner, that this type of measure – the expulsion of journalists carrying out their work – is not compatible with membership of the European Union? Specifically, does the Council have any type of mechanism for informing the Turkish Government of these cases, in order to prevent any repetition of these incidents, and in order to demonstrate to them in a practical way what the democratic functioning of the European institutions consists of?"@en1
