"Mr President, Mr Frédérique Ries has done well to bring to a successful conclusion this conciliation process which bans the use of pentabromodiphenyl ether and octabromodiphenyl ether. Anybody listening to me now, including, maybe, some of the many Members present in the hemicycle of our Parliament, may ask, ‘What are they?’. These substances are used in the construction industry, the textiles industry and the plastic objects and office supplies industries. Therefore, this substance which is banned from today but has been used up till now could be in our desks too. Could it be the influence of this octabromodiphenyl ether or this pentabromodiphenyl ether which makes us vote against good laws and – I suspect – against laws which would benefit pensioners too? If that is the case, we must expect there to be an improvement in our laws for we will no longer be the victims of this dangerous substance which is in our offices too."@en1
