". – Whilst the report of the committee set up by the European Parliament makes some important recommendations on how to improve the handling of any future outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, some MEPs are using the ‘wisdom of hindsight’ to launch wholly unjustified attacks on the UK Government. There is no doubt that the committee’s report underlines the scale of what was the world’s worst ever foot and mouth outbreak. It has to be remembered that on the day the alarm was first raised the disease had already taken hold in over 50 farms in 16 different counties. I understand the havoc it wreaked for so many individuals and communities in North Yorkshire and elsewhere. I know they need help to recover and reassurance that, at both UK and European level, we will do everything we can to ensure that such a devastating outbreak never occurs again. I hope that we will concentrate on the sensible and practical proposals put forward by the committee and other studies conducted into the outbreak – including the need to prevent infected meat and meat products entering the European Union."@en1
