"Madam President, everyone knows that the Communist Party of Greece opposed the arrest and abduction of the former president of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, and his arraignment before the so-called International Tribunal in June 2001 on charges of crimes in Yugoslavia. Anyone following the trial with an open mind can see that its purpose is to serve political interests. Doctors recently confirmed that there has been a serious deterioration in Milosevic's health, which is putting his life in immediate danger.
On behalf of the three MEPs of the Communist Party of Greece, I appeal to you personally and to the European Parliament, irrespective of your views on this case, to act from motives of basic humanitarianism and call for the trial to be stopped so that he has a chance to recover.
May I also point out that there was a huge demonstration in Belgrade yesterday making the same demand and that doctors from around the world have made a similar appeal. I trust that our appeal will meet with the proper response on your part."@en1
