". I voted for the Brok report in its amended form, despite its ambiguity on the subject of Turkey, in order to show clearly the historic importance of the reunification of Europe, even if, under the name of enlargement, this has happened too late and under conditions that are far from ideal. Mr Brok urges the European Union to adopt a more coherent stance on the question of Turkey’s candidacy. We urgently need to recognise that the unfortunate decision of the Helsinki European Summit, which gave Turkey the same status as a candidate country as Poland or Hungary, for example, is not based on any geographical, historical, cultural or legal grounds. The Copenhagen Summit provides an opportunity to end this ambiguity, which, if it is not resolved, will seriously taint relations between Turkey and the Member States for a long time to come. Instead of directly or indirectly setting an opening date for accession negotiations that would have no meaning, we should clearly place our relations with Turkey within the framework of a Euro-Mediterranean partnership which would be given true political substance, instead of simply being shunted onto a free trade platform."@en1
