".
I have voted in favour of this report largely for the same reasons I agree with the Poignant report on specific stability requirements for ro-ro passenger ferries. With the Stockholm Agreement, the countries of Northern Europe committed themselves to adapting their passenger ferries to more rigorous safety criteria than those currently in force, in order to make the ferries more stable, by means of certain construction measures, in the event of an accident at sea. This basically involved enabling ships to float longer in the event of a shipwreck. Since some of these measures were considered to be effective and their validity was also acknowledged for seas other than those in Northern Europe, the Commission is now proposing to revise Directive 98/18/EC of 17 March 1998, extending these safety measures to passenger ferries operating in European national waters too. In a parallel directive, the Commission is proposing to extend these measures to ships undertaking international journeys in all European seas. I agree with this range of concerns and, at the same time, especially welcome the particular importance this report attaches to promoting actions to improve access for passengers with reduced mobility."@en1
