"Mr President, Europol is a cooperation body that deals with some of the very worst crimes, against which democracies must protect themselves. I do not therefore think it is fair to talk about an informer state. That is an expression I should like to repudiate. Europol was of course set up and has had its powers extended partly at the request of Parliament and of the Committee on Citizens’ Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs. One reason for this is that Europol’s task is not of course to cause people trouble but to protect them."@en1
