"Madam President, I wish to table a point of order that ought to be incorporated into Parliament’s final report. In July, we voted here in Strasbourg in favour of a highly controversial report by Mrs van Lancker. In my country in particular, where this report was felt to breach the principle of subsidiarity, various citizens’ organisations wrote to the European Parliament asking it not to adopt the report. I am not attempting to reopen the debate, not least because the report was adopted by a majority of 280 votes to 240, but I do wish to express my surprise at the fact that the answers given by an official of this Parliament to some of these citizens expressed political positions. As I understand it, it is not the place of a Parliament official to express political positions and answer citizens in the name of only one of the groups that took part in the debate. I shall be forwarding the Presidency the letter in question, which came from the ‘Correspondence with Citizens’ Division, and I would ask the Bureau to emphasise that Parliament’s staff must be neutral and cannot adopt political positions, especially in a matter that divided this House and which was so controversial."@en1
