"Mr President, I am sorry to have requested the floor for a point of order, but my fellow Members informed me that, on Monday, Mr MacCormick made a series of statements concerning the rapporteurs on fisheries policy reform, which we are beginning to discuss in the Committee on Fisheries – I am one of these rapporteurs, and I am speaking personally, but I would also like to clear the good name of my fellow rapporteurs – in which he questioned the independence of our work and made accusations which I consider to be entirely unfounded. I am expressing my amazement publicly because, furthermore, when this type of thing happens, when a Member is given information that I believe to be incorrect, the first thing to be done is to make contact personally with those concerned, to allow us to provide him with the appropriate explanations. In any case, Mr President, I am telling you this so that you can pass on to President Cox my great concern, because this type of attitude does not help to create a climate of calm and tranquillity in complex debates and, more specifically, does not help us to establish good working practice. I would like to state my great concern over this issue and I would also like to tell you, Mr President, that I am very fond of Mr MacCormick’s homeland, that I pride myself on being an avid reader of Robert Louis Stevenson and that, quite frankly, if Mr MacCormick thought I had colluded with any Member States – which I categorically deny – then at the very least, in light of Stevenson’s famous tale, I was amazed to discover I have attended meetings at which I was not present. Mr President, I consider it impolite of him not to have spoken to us personally before making wild accusations.
