"The next item is the Council and Commission statements on floods in Europe. At the opening session yesterday afternoon, on behalf of the House, I sent our deepest sympathy and condolences to all the victims of the floods, who are so many: those who have lost their lives and those who, in terms of their homes and their businesses, have been so tragically displaced. I would like, on behalf of Parliament, to say to the Commission that its speedy recognition of the need to exercise and show solidarity on behalf of the European Union is greatly appreciated by this institution. I hope, in the course of today's debate, as we develop our thinking on the matter, that we can agree to find an early way forward to deliver on our promise of solidarity in the course of this budget year and to reflect on how we can be flexible enough to offer that kind of solidarity in the future. It gives me pleasure, in that context, to invite Mr Haarder to speak on behalf of the Council."@en1
