". Our aim, Mr Sacrédeus, is to avoid there being a ‘later’, by that I mean that the Americans withdraw these measures as soon as possible, in other words, before they are condemned by the WTO – which would obviously be the best solution, but quite unlikely, to be honest – or when they are condemned by the WTO, which should happen, we estimate, towards the middle of next year. Therefore, this is a ‘later’ which is not ‘very late’, and that is our main aim. In the meantime, we wish to make use of all our rights within the WTO to put pressure on the United States so that, as I said, we can obtain compensation and/or exemptions, so that the impact on our steel industries – as and when the Americans grant exemptions, which are, in fact, derogations to the tariff increases in aid of our exporters – is as positive as possible. A number of exemption packages have already been announced, more are expected and we must continue to exert the necessary pressure. We shall use the measures that the WTO allows us to take in view of our interests and the fact that the United States will ultimately have to comply with international rules."@en1
