".
Our vote reflects the fact that we consider the compromise reached in the Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism to be acceptable. In this extremely sensitive area, which is so often overlooked and whose importance is so often underestimated – basically, a structured form of pedestrian protection – we endorse the drawing up of a framework-directive clearly establishing a timetable and procedures for an agreement negotiated with the automobile industry, specifically with regard to the monitoring assessments that are laid down. This approach goes some way towards safeguarding the Commission’s line, which has the merit of speeding up a process which might otherwise drag on indefinitely and only achieve its objective after an extremely lengthy consultation process. A study will then, of course, have to be carried out on the framework-directive, in which the Commission must, as specified, formalise the general conditions of the agreement negotiated with the automobile industry. Only then, strictly speaking, can a careful, informed assessment of its content be carried out."@en1
