"Madam President, this is important for all our citizens, but we have also experienced difficulties in our own work in Parliament as a result of spam mail. We had a recent example in the food supplements directive. The Green/ EFA group has fought right from the beginning for an opt-in and I am glad that Parliament has adopted that, because no other system could defend privacy and data protection efficiently.
However, we were critical that the proposal opens the door for Member States to force providers of electronic services to retain personal and other data for a certain period of time. I have voted against this paragraph. It is unacceptable, on the one hand, to allow eavesdropping and, on the other hand, not to establish any safeguards against these practices. Therefore I have voted against."@en1
