"Mr President, I would first like to thank the Members who have visited the region recently and brought their first-hand experiences back to us here today. Like many other Members of the House, in the last few weeks I have met representatives from the Middle East who have come here to appeal for our help. Like Mrs Morgantini last week, I had the privilege of meeting very brave and very inspirational Israeli and Palestinian women who are working together for peace – peace between equals as they see it. They explained to us very vividly way just how desperate the situation is. The work that the Palestinians have done in building up the very basics of a state over the past 10 years is systematically being destroyed. Most of the women worked for NGOs and their files, computers and property had been destroyed so they could no longer continue their work. There have been many resolutions and conferences. They are all essential and there will be many more, but these women did not see the intervention needed to stop further bloodshed. They were calling for a peacekeeping force to protect the people and I believe that we should support that call. A policy of force can never get rid of the levels of desperation and despair that lead to further acts of violence. There must be a just and peaceful solution for the long term, as well as a swift response to stop any further killing now. We must ensure that we keep up the pressure at all levels, in every way we can, to get that lasting peace."@en1
