While I was there, I listened very carefully to the Chechen Foreign Minister, Ilyas Akhmadov, who, like myself was a guest at the Congress too. I was already aware of the tragedy taking place in Chechnya and the suffering of the Chechen people, so many thousands of whom have died, but the Foreign Minister’s speech further convinced me how important it is to remember all the people who cannot obtain independence through self-determination and who suffer such severe violations of rights.
