"Mr President, Mr Coelho’s report seeks to increase police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters. The Pensioners’ Party, represented by myself, voted for this report. Why is that? Because I feel that one of the points contained in the report is extremely important: the fight against corruption, which is particularly important at a time when the candidate countries are preparing to become European Union States. I regret to say that communism, which ruled in these States with an undemocratic authoritative system for 50 years, led to a considerable increase in corruption, which the European Union, with its democracy, must help to reduce to as low a level as possible"@en1
