"Mr President, everyone is aware that parliamentary immunity was not instituted to safeguard the personal interests of elected representatives. It is provided to serve the greater good, namely democratic institutions. Its purpose is to ensure the latter’s independence from executive, legislative and media powers. Elected assemblies must therefore give careful consideration to all events and proceedings taking place in the run-up to elections. I am pleased this was the case regarding the request to lift the parliamentary immunity of certain colleagues, one of whom is standing in the French presidential election."@en1
