"I am not happy with the document on the future of the European Union with regard to the Laeken Council, Madam President, even though I voted for it, because it does not say that the European Union should, in future, have the competence to legislate on European pension systems. All 15 Member States, plus the other 12 that have applied to join the European Union, have pension systems in deficit. The national governments have been unable to administer their funds. What better evidence could there be that only the European Union can solve the problem of those workers who hand their money over to the State and then do not get it back when they reach old age? Perhaps – I hope, I am sure – the European Union will be better at administering the European citizens’ pension funds."@en1
