"Mr President, the terrorist attacks in September have disrupted the operations of many airline companies in Europe, resulting in job losses in the aviation industry and a reduction in the number of overseas tourists coming to Europe. We want to ensure that we retain competitive airline companies in Europe.
I agree with the key proposals included in the compromise resolutions that are before us today. It is important that the Commission works out a set of proposals which make it possible for the European airline industry to withstand the competition resulting from the massive help which the American Government is giving American airlines at this time. We must ensure that the European aviation industry receives equal treatment vis-à-vis our American airline counterparts, particularly when it comes to addressing transatlantic arrangements. For example, from an Irish perspective, Aer Lingus is highly dependent on transatlantic travel. Other EU airlines also make a substantial profit from their transatlantic routes. It is important that these EU airlines can compete against the American airlines which have received state aid from the American Government in recent times."@en1
