lpv:translated text	"Madam President, at the Conference of Presidents, my group proposed that we hold a debate on the G8 summit in Genoa, essentially on its content. Why? Because the European Union participated in the G8 summit in Genoa – and I refer to the graphic testimonials if anybody has any doubt. The photograph of the leaders included the President of the Commission, Mr Romano Prodi, and the President-in-Office of the Council, the Belgian Prime Minister, Mr Verhofstadt, and, therefore, since they participated actively in the summit, one on behalf of the Commission and the other on behalf of the European Council, and since the summit dealt with a series of issues which are important to this Parliament, to Europe and to the world, we also believe that it is our duty to comment on the content of the G8 Summit. I would also like to point out that my group proposed – and there is agreement on this in the Committee on Citizens’ Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs – that, in relation to possible violations of the fundamental rights of European citizens and the management of public order during the summit, the Committee on Citizens’ Freedoms should produce a recommendation with a view above all to learning from past mistakes, in the light of the Laeken Summit. Finally, Madam President, please allow me to address the Members, particularly from the Liberal Group, because on this occasion it so happens that Mr Verhofstadt is a liberal Prime Minister of a coalition government and the most recent friends of President Prodi, at least the Italian ones, sit within the Liberal Group. And I am addressing Mr Cox so that he might have the opportunity to send compliments to the representatives of his group who sat on the European Council."@en1
