"Mr President, page 15 of the Hulthén report states, ‘Sound and sustainable management of the Earth's resources is essential for the survival of mankind.’ I read this part of the Hulthén report to my mother, who lives in Rome, and whom I am always going round to see, as I did, indeed, yesterday. She said to me, ‘But why on earth should the future survival of mankind interest me? I am 88 years old: my future is today. Go and ask Mrs Hulthén and the European Parliament’ – and that is why I am asking you now – ‘to think not just about the future survival of mankind’ – an excellent thing, which is why I voted for the motion – ‘but also about the survival of mankind right now, which is all too often not a very cheering subject but which I feel is really important for us here at this time.’"@en1
