"It is a very pressing issue that Mr Sacrédeus is addressing. It has also been discussed in detail in the Council. One conclusion drawn is that there are unfortunately many historical events of the 20th century in which atrocities have been carried out. That applies, unfortunately, not only to the Holocaust which we have just been talking about but also to other events which there will be a desire to remember and use as a point of departure in the fight against intolerance and xenophobia. We have therefore arrived at the view that it is probably most appropriate to let the issue of a national day of remembrance be purely a issue and to inspire national authorities to take decisions to establish such days. It might perhaps be better to refrain from recommending a specific day, for example 27 January, as a European day of remembrance. There are so many other dates. For example, there is Crystal Night, which is important to remember in many countries, and we have the days around the end of the war in 1945, which can also be important days to remember. We therefore believe that the best course is to inspire national decisions rather than try to put forward proposals to be decided upon at European level."@en1
