"The crucial factor for change is for the wage gap to be made apparent, not only at national level but also at every place of work and within every branch of industry, that is to say at that level at which the wage negotiations take place. It is at that level that the analyses of women’s and men’s wages are required as a basis for doing something about wage discrimination. In Sweden and Finland, we already have legislation requiring all employers to prepare annual equality plans, including plans for securing equal pay for work of equal value. Yesterday evening, the Committee on Women’s Rights and Equal Opportunities voted through a proposal to implement this throughout the European Union. I would ask the Commissioner whether she is prepared to give her support to this proposal."@en1
