"Madam President, I should just like to briefly explain why I supported Amendment No 35, which could be described as a "wrecking amendment". It was not the intention of this amendment to wreck the directive. But because the changes Parliament wants to make to this directive are so fundamental, we would like to send it back to the Commission to allow them to rewrite it to take into account the marketing ban and take a more realistic view of the alternative testing methods that may be available, not using animals. Therefore I would not like my vote and those of the others in my group who supported that amendment to be misconstrued. The United Kingdom has already banned animal testing. We would like to see that taken forward in a realistic and practical way."@en1
