"Madam President, I voted in favour of the directive on life assurance.
As you are aware, during the course of their working life, one reason why many people take out life assurance is in order to receive a pension when they are older.
As I was about to vote, I remembered my daughter, Cristina Fatuzzo – now 24 years old – who, when she was still a small child of eight or nine and already interested in my work and pensions, asked me: ‘Why is it that when pensioners receive their pension from the State, they have to give some of it back in the form of tax? Would it not be simpler to give them a little less money rather than making them pay tax? Why do they have to pay tax?’ In her naivety, she said something which I am now putting to you: why do we not help pensioners in matters of taxation by exempting them from paying taxes?"@en1
