". – Mr President, I am not at the moment in a position to agree with Mr Titley's statement that there is less and less competition in banking. That is something that would require further research. However, it is certainly the business of the Commission to see that fair competition prevails. As Mr Titley will appreciate, it is my colleague Mr Monti who deals with competition. I know that Mr Monti has made certain investigations, but they were more concerned with the exchange of currency. There are two different aspects involved here: first the cost of transferring money, which was the original question put to me, and secondly the cost of currency exchanges. The Commission's investigations on this have not yet reached their conclusion. The latter will, of course, be a thing of the past for the twelve "Euroland" Member States as from 1 January 2002."@en1
