lpv:translated text	"Mr President, along with the majority of Parliament, I voted against this document which seeks to harmonise the Community penalties for those who smuggle illegal immigrants onto Union territory. I feel that it is much more important – and so do all the pensioners who sent me to the European Parliament – and would be much more useful to combat illegal immigration into Europe by stepping up controls at Europe's borders. Rather than punishing and fining those who are caught in the act of entering European territory illegally, it would be more appropriate to channel more resources and funds into improving controls at Europe's borders."@en¹
